How to Turn Followers Into Email Subscribers (Before It’s Too Late)
Let me ask you something uncomfortable.
What happens to your business if LinkedIn disappears tomorrow?
Your account gets banned. Or the algorithm buries you. Or LinkedIn changes the rules overnight and your reach drops to zero.
All those followers you worked so hard for? Gone. Just like that.
Here’s the hard truth most creators ignore:
You don’t own your LinkedIn audience. You rent it.
LinkedIn owns those followers. They decide who sees your posts. They can cut your access anytime, for any reason. And you’d have no way to reach the audience you spent years building.
Scary, right?
There’s a fix. And it’s not complicated.
You move people off LinkedIn and onto something you actually own: an email list.
Today I’ll show you why this matters and exactly how to do it.
Rented vs. Owned
Let’s get clear on the difference.
Rented audience: Your followers on LinkedIn, X, Instagram, anywhere. The platform controls the relationship. They decide if your content gets seen. They can ban you, throttle you, or change the rules whenever they want.
Owned audience: Your email list. You have their contact directly. No algorithm in between. No platform deciding if they hear from you. You email, it lands in their inbox. Simple.
See the difference?
With rented, you’re at the mercy of someone else. With owned, you’re in control.
Every follower you have right now is rented. And that’s a risk sitting under your entire business.
Why Email Still Wins
“But email is old. Isn’t social media better?”
No. And here’s why email beats social every time.
1. You own it.
Already covered this, but it’s the big one. Nobody can take your email list away. It’s yours forever.
2. It actually gets seen.
On LinkedIn, maybe 2-5% of your followers see any given post.
With email, it lands in every single inbox. Way more of your audience actually sees what you send.
3. It’s more personal.
Email feels direct. One to one. It’s a stronger connection than a post in a crowded feed.
People read emails in a focused space, not while scrolling past a hundred other things.
4. It converts better.
When it’s time to sell something, email outperforms social by a mile.
Your list is your warmest audience. They chose to hear from you. They’re far more likely to buy.
Social media builds the audience. Email monetizes it. You need both.
The Big Mistake Most Creators Make
Here’s what most people do.
They spend years building a LinkedIn following. 5K, 10K, 50K followers. They feel successful.
And they never capture a single email.
Then one day something changes. A ban. An algorithm shift. Burnout. And they realize they have no way to reach their own audience.
All that work. Gone.
Don’t be that person.
Start capturing emails now. Even if you only have 500 followers. Especially if you only have 500 followers. The earlier you start, the bigger your list grows over time.
The best time to start building your email list was when you started posting. The second best time is today.
How to Actually Do It
Okay. Here’s the practical part. How to turn your LinkedIn followers into email subscribers.
Step 1: Give them a reason.
Nobody hands over their email for nothing.
You need something worth subscribing for. Options:
A newsletter with real value (like this one)
A free resource (guide, template, checklist, swipe file)
A free email course
Exclusive content they can’t get on LinkedIn
The key: make it genuinely valuable. Something your ideal audience actually wants.
A great lead magnet does the heavy lifting. Make it good.
Step 2: Put the link where people see it.
Once you have something to offer, make it easy to find.
Places to put your subscribe link:
Your LinkedIn featured section (prime real estate)
Your profile’s “website” link
The “Creator Mode” link area
Pinned comments on your posts
Occasionally in your posts themselves
Don’t hide it. If people want in, make the path obvious.
Step 3: Mention it in your content.
Your posts are how people discover you. Use them to point to your list.
Not every post. That gets annoying. But regularly.
“I go deeper on this in my newsletter. Link in my featured section.”
“Wrote a full guide on this. It’s free, link in the comments.”
Soft mentions. Natural. Woven into content that already delivers value.
Give value first, then offer more. People follow that path happily.
Step 4: Use your best content as the hook.
Here’s a smart move.
When a post does well, that topic clearly resonates. Turn it into a lead magnet or a newsletter issue. Then point people to it.
“This post blew up, so I wrote a complete guide on it. Grab it free here.”
You’re giving people more of what they already showed they want. Easy yes.
Step 5: Make subscribing dead simple.
Don’t overcomplicate the signup.
Ask for the email. Maybe a first name. That’s it.
Every extra field you add, fewer people sign up. Keep it to one or two steps. Remove all friction.
The easier it is, the more people do it.
What to Do With Your List
Getting subscribers is step one. Keeping them is step two.
Don’t collect emails and go silent. That’s a waste.
Email your list regularly. Weekly is great. Give them real value every time, the same way you do on LinkedIn.
Build the relationship. Stay top of mind. When you eventually have something to sell, they’ll be ready.
A list you never email is almost as useless as no list at all. Show up for them.
Start Small, Think Long
You don’t need a huge list to make this worth it.
A small, engaged email list beats a big, rented following you don’t control.
100 subscribers who open and read your emails is more valuable than 10,000 LinkedIn followers who might never see your posts.
So start now. Set up a simple way to collect emails. Create one thing worth subscribing for. Point your audience to it.
Then keep showing up, on LinkedIn to grow, and in their inbox to deepen the relationship.
Build on rented land, but always be moving people to land you own.
That’s how you build something that lasts.
Your Homework
This week, do this:
Set up a simple email capture. A newsletter signup or a free resource. Keep it basic.
Create one thing worth subscribing for. Your best lead magnet idea. Make it genuinely useful.
Add the link to your LinkedIn featured section and profile today.
In your next few posts, mention your list naturally. Point people to it.
Commit to emailing your list regularly once people start joining. Don’t go silent.
Your followers are rented.
Start building something you own.
That’s it for this week.
If you set up your email capture this week, reply and tell me what you’re offering to get people to subscribe. I’d love to hear your lead magnet idea.
See you next time.
That’s a wrap for today.
